Ms. Myra Rhoden, Band Director rhoden.myra@fcboe.org

A native of Tuskegee, Alabama, Myra Rhoden received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts degree in Music Education from The University of Alabama in 1994 and 1999. She is a candidate for the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting from The University of Southern Mississippi under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Fraschillo. Rhoden taught public school for nine years at the middle and high school levels in Alabama before joining Fayette County High School in 2003. She has won Teacher of the Year and the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award, a national award given to one teacher in each state for an outstanding 1st year of teaching. Ms. Rhoden performs with Tara Winds Community Band, conducted by Dr. David Gregory, and performed with the Southeast Alabama Community Band in Troy, AL, conducted by Dr. Johnny Long. She is a member of the NBA, MENC and GMEA, serves on the board of Directors for the Southeastern United States (SEUS) Honor Band Clinic at Troy University, served on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Bandmasters Association, and serves as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Southeast.

Mr. Jonathan Broome, Assistant Band Director broome.jonathan@fcboe.org

Jonathan Broome received his degree in Music Education from The University of West Georgia. Prior to joining Fayette County High School, Mr. Broome was the Director of Bands at Jonesville Middle School in Bowdon, Georgia and assisted with the Bowdon High School Band of Pride. Mr. Broome is a member of Tara Winds and has performed with the Southern Territorial Band and the Atlanta Temple Band of The Salvation Army, as well as the Georgia Brass Band. He is a member of NBA, MENC, and GMEA. Mr. Broome is married to Jennifer Broome, who teaches middle school band in Carroll County.

Kenneth F. Beard, Band Director beard.ken@fcboe.org

Mr. Beard is currently in his fifteenth year at Fayette County High School. Mr. Beard taught previously at Forest Park HS, Newton County HS, and Fayette County Junior High. A native of Georgia, Mr. Beard earned his Bachelor of Music Education at Georgia State University in 1976 and a Master of Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music in 1978, with Clarinet as his primary instrument. Mr. Beard was a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble with Dr. Donald Hunsberger, while working on his Master's Degree. Mr. Beard has received the "Citation of Excellence" from the National Band Association on three different occasions and has been listed several times in Who's Who Among American Teachers. He is a member of GMEA, MENC, NBA, and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society and serves as the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Band Chairman. Mr. Beard is the Orchestra Director at New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville and lives with three other musicians, his wife Cynthia, and sons Kenneth Jr. and Jonathan.

Ms. Rhoden attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and graduated with a BA in Instrumental Music Education in 1994 and a MA in 1999. Rhoden was Director at Westlawn Middle School and Assistant Director at Central High School in Tuscaloosa, AL from 1994 - 1997; Director at Booker T. Washington High School in Tuskegee, AL from 1997 - 2001; and Director at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, AL from 2001 - 2003 before joining Fayette County High School in 2003. Ms. Rhoden has won Teacher of the Year and the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award, a national award given to one teacher in each state for an outstanding 1st year of teaching. Ms. Rhoden performs with the Southeast Alabama Community Band in Troy, AL conducted by Dr, Johnny Long and is a member of the National Band Association (NBA), Women Band Directors International (WBDI), MENC: The National Association for Music Education, and served on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Bandmasters Association.

Mr. Eric Slay, Assistant Band Director slay.eric@fcboe.org

Mr. Slay received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance from the State University of West Georgia in 1998, and in 2000 he earned his Master of Music degree in Music Performance from Florida State University. Mr. Slay taught previously at Heard County High School from 2001 - 2003 before joining Fayette County High School in 2003. While working on his degree at Florida State University, Mr. Slay was a member of the Florida State Wind Ensemble under the direction of James Croft. Mr. Slay was also the graduate assistant for the State University of West Georgia Bands and Trombone Studio. His principal teachers include William Daggett III, M. Scott McBride, and John Drew. He has performed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (FL), Cobb Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Wind Symphony, and Orchestra Atlanta. He also performed with the International Youth Wind Orchestra for the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference in Schladming, Austria. Mr. Slay is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Georgia Music Educators Association, and International Trombone Association. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Fayette County High School, Mr. Slay is currently the Instructor of Trombone at the State University of West Georgia.
